Description |
The tomato is an annual vegetable crop of widespread culture and popularity and under normal conditions yields upto 50 tonnes per hectare are usual (Rick, 1976). In India, tomato is number one vegetable crop and occupies an area of 0.29 million hectares with productivity of 15.82 tonnes/ha (Chhabra, Neelam 1992). The scenario of tomato production in India has tremendously changed over the past decade with increasing dominance of hybrid varieties in commercial cultivation. The value of tomato hybrids depends upon their adaptability to a particular agroclimatic region tolerance/resistance to principal pests of the region 'besides bearing high yield potential and superior quality.
