Description |
In India the Himalaya hill and mountain ecosystem extends over twelve states from Jarnmu and Kashmir in the North-West to Nagaland in the North-East and is about 2800 km long and 222 to 300 km wide. It covers a total area of about 591 thousand sq. km inhabiting nearly 5 1 million people and accounts for 18 per cent and 6 per cent of area and population of the country, respectively. The region is endowed with diverse agro-climatic conditions, which permit the successful production of all kinds of fruits (temperate to sub-tropical) and vegetables (off-season to exotic). These fruits: apple, pears, stone fruits, mango, litchi, citrus and nuts and vegetables: cole crops, peas, potato and tomato provide a remunerative means for the diversification of land use for improving the productivity and returns, providing nutritional security to the rural population, increasing employment opportunities, providing raw material for the expanding agro processing industries, thereby improving economy of the rural population. Commercial horticulture in the Northwest Himalayan states cover an area of 693 thousand hectares with a production of about 2235 thousand tonnes of fruits (Thakur, 2003).
