Description |
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the staple cereal crops of the world, both in terms of area (147.3 m ha) and production (518.4 m t) - (Annonyraous, 1992). In Asia, where 90 per cent of the world's rice is grown and consumed, nearly 2.8 million people derive 35-60 per cent of calories from rice. India has the largest area under rice, producing about 100 m t of paddy from over 42 m ha. The current average yield of milled rice in India is about 1.5 t per ha in contrast to nearly 5 t per ha in North and South Korea, Japan, Australia and United States of America; and 4 t in China (Swaminathan, 1989)
