Description |
Wheat is the most important cereal crop of Rabi season. The national average yield of wheat is only 18 35.0 kb/ha which i s quite low. With a total production of 456.6 thousand tonnes, Himachal Pradesh has 361.8 thousand hectare under wheat cultivation. The average yield of wheat of the s t a t e works out to 12 62.0 kg/ha which is quite low in comparison to national average and that of the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana (3006.8 kg/ha and 2526.1 kg/ha, respectively). It may be worth mentioning here that the average national or state yields which have been mentioned above also include the yields from irrigated areas. For example, the national average of 1835.9 kg/ha also includes the yield from 60 per cent of the irrigated area on which wheat is cultivated. In Punjab and Haryana, respectively 7 5 and 90 per cent area under whe^t is irrigated. Considering that the national average yi3ld of wheat and that of Punjab and Haryana from irrigated area are respectively 2765.8, 3563.5 and 2693.1 kg/ha i t can be assumed that the mean yield from rainfed area is quite low (Anonymous, 198 3).
