Description |
Robert T Malthus in 1798 had postulated that unless checked by wars or disaster, human population increases at a geometric rate and food supply at an arithmetic rate (Allard, I960). The Indian population increased from 360 to 750 million between 1951 and 1989. In the same period, agricultural productivity increased from 54.9 to 150 m tonnes (Anonymous, 1988). But this increase is not solely because of increase in productivity per unit area but due to increase in actual area under agriculture, from 124 to 167 m ha between 1950-82, by diversion of forest land to cultivation, accompanied by an increase in area under irrigation from 22.6 to 58.7 m ha during the same period (Anonymous, 1976).
