Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) - a member of Solanaceae family and one of the most important vegetable crop, though originated in Tropical America, is presently grown throughout the world. At present, tomato production in India ranks second only to potato and stands first as far as processing of vegetables is concerned (Sandhu et al., 1990). The area under this crop in the world is 3.040 million hectares with an annual production of about 72.746 million tonnes and in India this crop occupies an area of 0.387 million hectares with an annual production of about 4.6 million tonnes (Anon., 1992). In Himachal Pradesh, tomato is cultivated in an area of 3 thousand hectares with an annual production of about 56 thousand tonnes (Chhabra, 1992).
