Description Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important cereal crop of India and used as staple food. Based on all India figures (1983-84), it is grown in an area of 5888.3 thousand hectares and its annual production is 7923.6 thousand tonnes (Anonrmous, 1984). Banded sclerotial disease of maize incited by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn f.sp. sasakii Exner was first time reported from Sri Lanka (Bertus, 1927). In India it was first recorded from Tarai region of Uttar Pradesh in 1960 by Ullstrup (Payak and Renfro, 1966). Thereafter, it was reported from Khulwadi (Karnal), Solan, Sundernagar, Bajaura, Dhaulakuan, Bulandshahr, Delhi, Almora, Hompur and Dhariawad (Anonymous 1974, 76, 77, 80 & 83).
