Description |
Diabetes Mellitus is increasing at an alarming rate with a sharp upswing world wide as a non-infectious epidemic and is one of the top five leading causes of death in most developed countries. Diabetes is the second leading cause of blindness, cardiovascular and renal disease worldwide. In terms of ranks of countries, China takes the top spot, with India close behind. According to latest statistics released by the International Diabetes Federation (2012), the prevalence of diabetes among adults aged 20-70 years is expected to rise from 366.2 million in 2011 to 551.8 million by the year 2030; 80% of these people with diabetes will be from developing countries. The incidence of diabetes in three leading countries with diabetes populations i.e. China, India, and United States of America will increase from an approximate estimate of 90, 61.3 and 23.7 million people with diabetes in 2011 to 129.7, 101.2 and 29.6 million people respectively by 2030 with more than 60% of the world's diabetic population in Asia in 2030 (International Diabetes Federation, 2012). The International Diabetes Federation (2012) reports that biggest changes in the number of diabetics will occur in Africa (90%), followed very closely by Middle East and North Africa (83%), North America and Caribbean (36%) and Europe (22%) will change the least (14.7 to 28.0, 32.8 to 59.7 37.7 to 51.2 and 52.6 to 64.0 million diabetic people respectively). While type 2 diabetes mellitus poses a huge economic burden to all nations, developing countries bear the highest burden, since more than 80% of cases occur in these countries. It is estimated that 7.0 million people have undiagnosed diabetes (National Diabetes Fact Sheet 2011).
