Description |
Food legumes, commonly known as pulses find a place in Indian diets because of good source of protein and other nutrients which are essential for supplementation of cereal based diets. Pulses or legumes occupy the second place after cereals as the source of calories and protein in human diet. Pulses not only add variety to the human diet but also serve as economic source of supplementary proteins for a large human population in developing countries. India is the major pulse producing country in the world with an aggregate production of 19.57 million tons (Anonymous 2014). Large segment of the human population in developing countries suffer from protein malnutrition and the production of pulse is unable to meet the requirements of the expanding population of the country. Among the different pulses, rice bean is one of the underutilized and orphan pulse crops.
