Pastures and grasslands from prehistoric times have been playing a vital role in the economy of human beings by providing fodder for livestock. In Himalayan region forests and pastures spread over 12 states (east to west) accounting for 61.5 million hectares of total land area. Out of this 1.7 m ha is covered by the alpine pastures (Singh, 1988) and more than two third of which lies in Himachal Pradesh (Katoch et al., 1992). The Western Himalayan humid region comprising of Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. In Himachal Pradesh it includes higher reaches of Shimla, Kullu, Solan, Chamba, Mandi, Kangra and Sirmour districts (Sharma et al., 2001). The temperature in these regions of the State generally ranges from 4-30 C with annual rainfall around 1500 mm. The soils are generally silty-loam in texture and are highly prone to soil erosion hazards. The pastures and grasslands of these regions are subjected to severe human interference, continuous and uncontrolled grazing and deforestation have lead to the elimination of palatable and nutritious grass/legume species and thus resulting in the dominance of unpalatable and undesirable grasses, weeds and bushes. The natural legume component is negligible. The present level of production of these pastures is far less of their actual potential. In Himachal Pradesh about 24 per cent of total geographical area lies under natural grasslands and permanent pastures, which serve as a major source of forage production. While the cultivable forage crops occupy only 0.8 per cent of total cultivable area (Anonymous, 2003), and there is least scope of extension of area under fodder production because more area is required to be put under food crops.
