Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food for nearly one-half of the world population. It is cultivated in an area of 153.8 million hectares with annual production of 618.5 million tonnes (FAO, 2006). Although, rice is grown in 112 countries, spanning an area from 530 latitude north to 350 south, about 95 per cent of the crop is grown and consumed in Asia. Rice provides nearly 60 per cent of the calories in Southeast Asia and about 35 per cent in East and South Asia.
