Wheat, maize, rice and barley occupy more than 80 per cent of the total cropped area in Himachal Pradesh. Research efforts in the past have been to maximize the productivity of these crops. However, modeling of growth, development and yield of these crops through computer simulation are lacking. Simulation models have several applications, among which yield forecasting and working out simulation-guided management practices under different agro-climatic and resource situations are of practical significance. Among the four major cereal crops, while work on simulation of rice and wheat growth, development and yield models has been done, no information/data sets are available to use maize and barley models for yield prediction and other applications of crop models.
