Description Blackgram, Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper, popularly known as urdbean or mash, is a grain legume domesticated from V. mungo var. silvestris (Lukoki et al. 1980). It is extensively cultivated in the Indian subcontinent and to a lesser extent in Thailand, Australia and other Asian and south Pacific countries (Poehlman 1991). Archeological studies have shown that this crop is cultivated since prehistoric period in India as far back as 2200 B.C. The area has increased from 2.09 million ha in 1971-75 to 2.97 million ha in 2006-09 with production almost doubled from 0.64 million tones to 1.33 million tones (Singh et al. 2010). However, the productivity has shown a slow progress (Singh and Ahlawat 2005). Low productivity in this crop is attributable to its narrow genetic base due to common ancestry of various superior genotypes, poor plant type, vulnerability to abiotic and biotic stresses and their cultivation in marginal and harsh environment (Ali et al. 2006). Blackgram is susceptible to different leaf spotting pathogens such as Cercospora canescens, Cercospora cruenta and Colletotrichum truncatum in high rainfall areas in the mid-hills of North Western Himalayas resulting in drastic reduction in grain yield (Singh et al. 1978; Kaushal and Singh 1988).
