Dependable statistical information on non-agricultural establishments in the unorganised sector was not easily available in the country. With a view to filling up data gaps in the un-organised sector of non-agricultural economy, a country-wide Economic Census was organised in the last quarter of 1977 by the Central Statistical Organisation, Government of India in collaboration with the State Statistical Bureaus. Himachal Pradesh also participated in this census of national importance.
