Description |
There are few more popular group of orchids than the tropical Asiatic Slipper orchids. Paphiopedilum. Interest in growing these fascinating plants has spanned one and a half centuries and today they are more popular than ever amongst both amateur and professional orchid growers. A detailed work with all the species illustrated is therefore long overdue. Many of the beautiful colour plates in this work have appeared in the past in Curtis's Botanical Magazine and The Kew Magazine, whilst others have been especially drawn for this Monograph. The drawings demonstrate not only the skill of the artists, but the evolution of botatnical illustration over more than 150 years from early hand-coloured engravings and lithographs to modern offset lithographic reproduction. They are an enduring record of artistry and of the botanical accuracy so important in distinguishing closely related species. |
