It is held that over a million years ago, when the man had his birth, the Himalayas also emerged. The river valley terraces in the Shivalik foothills and the plains in the northwest Punjab, punch and Jammu provided an ideal setting for habitation of early man and this is proved by the discovery there of pebble and coral tools and large flakes embedded in fan-shaped boulder-gravels used by him.
