Description The field experiment entitled, “Studies on spacing-cumclipping on herbage and seed production of amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.) Cv. Konkan Durangi.” was carried out at Horticulture nursery No. 04, Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, Tal. Dapoli, Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth Dapoli, Dist. Ratnagiri, Maharashtra State (India) in the academic year 2016-17 in Split Plot Design with three replications. Two factors namely studied in this experiment

spacing and clipping. The spacing i.e. S1, S2, S3 and S4 were treated as main plot treatments while clippings i.e. C1, C2, C3 and C4 were treated as sub plot treatments. Thus, in all 16 treatment combinations were studied.
Under different spacing all the clipping treatments and their interactions showed significant variation in most of the growth parameters, flowering behaviour, yield attributing characters and seed yield at harvest.
The highest plant height (125.58 cm), diameter at collar region (1.05 cm), seed yield inflorescence-1 (0.59 g), length of inflorescence (30.63 cm) was recorded in treatment S2 (30 cm line sowing). Maximum number of rachis inflorescence-1 (34.23), dry matter (63.05 g) recorded in treatment S3 (45 cm line sowing). Green herbage yield kg plot-1 (0.22 kg) was highest in S4. Thus, number of nodes (21.77) and seed yield plot-1 (0.58 kg) was in S1. The highest inter-nodal length (7.10 cm), number of branches (3.50), number of inflorescence plant-1 (2.00), seed yield plant-1 (3.01 g) were recorded in S2 (30 cm line sowing and yield hectare-1 (1.01 t ha-1) was recorded in S1 (15 cm line sowing).
Significantly the highest plant height (127.31 cm), internodal length (7.03 cm), number of nodes (22.25), diameter at collar region (1.10 cm), green herbage yield (0.27 kg), number of inflorescence plant-1 (2.13), highest number of branches (3.08), seed yield inflorescence-1 (0.58 g), seed yield plot-1 (0.49 kg), seed yield plant-1 (3.05 g) and seed yield hectare-1 (0.85 t ha-1) was recorded in C2 (clipping at 30 DAS). The clipping treatment C4 (no clipping) showed the least days to flower initiation (41.58
48

days). Length of inflorescence (33.18 cm), number of rachis inflorescence-1 (34.42) were noticed in C1 (clipping at 20 DAS).
While observing the interaction effect of spacing and clipping treatments; the highest plant height (138.3 cm), seed yield plant-1 (3.94 g), seed yield plot-1 (0.65 kg), seed yield ha-1 (1.15 t ha-1), highest diameter at collar region (1.19 cm), seed yield inflorescence-1 (0.756 g), highest number of branches (3.73), highest number of inflorescence plant-1 (2.53) were noticed in S2C2 (30 cm line sowing with clipping at 30 DAS). Inter nodal length (7.79 cm) was recorded maximum in S3C2. The highest numbers of nodes plant-1 (24.26) were found in S1C2. Among the interaction effects, the treatment combination S4C1 produced the highest length of inflorescence (36.66 cm) and number of rachis inflorescence-1 (38.13). Whereas, highest green herbage yield (0.31 kg) was in S3C2 and number of seeds gram-1 (1759.33) were in S2C4. Whereas, highest dry matter plant-1 (75.01 g) was in S1C4.
Thus, from the above findings, it could be concluded that, the amaranth Cv. Konkan Durangi sown at 30 cm row spacing with clipping at 30 days after sowing recorded significantly highest yield.
