Description The state of Orissa with a coastline of 480
km spread along six coastal districts namely Ganjam,
Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and
Baleshwar is endowed with a prawn fishery of
considerable importance. The lengthy coastline with
a continental shelf of 25,000 km2 and EEZ of
considerable magnitude, the Chilaka lake (water
spread varies from 906 km2 to 1,165 km2 during
summer and the monsoons respectively) and the
estuaries of the Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga,
Baitarani, Brahmani, Mahanadi and Rushikulya
support fisheries for various species. The
continental shelf up to 200 m depth covers an area
of 25,000 sq km, which is 4.5% of the total area of
the country’s continental shelf. In the northern part
of Orissa, the continental shelf extends up to 120
km and in the southern part up to 40 km, which is
providing habitat to prawns and other demersal
resources.
