The family Zingiberaceae consists of versatile group of plants known as gingers which come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and colours. Gingers are also important natural resources which provide many useful products for food, spices, medicines, dyes, perfume etc. “Garden of gingers” is an initiative from ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, Kerala with an objective of conserving crop wild relatives (CWR) of gingers collected from different parts of the nation. The garden was planned to be a knowledge centre on species of Curcuma, Zingiber, Alpinia, Etlingera, Kaempferia, Amomum, Hedychium, Boesenbergia and Globba for the researchers, academicians and students. Besides CWR, the released varieties and farmer’s varieties of ginger and turmeric are also being collected and exhibited. The garden showcases over 100 species, varieties and horticultural cultivars of the plants of the ginger order (Zingiberales). Besides conservation, these species also serve as the important secondary gene pool for studies on secondary metabolites and disease resistance to cultivated ginger and turmeric.
