Tropical tuber crops play an important role in the food and nutritional security of one fifth of the world population. Cassava assumes significance as a starchy secondary staple, animal feed and industrial raw material. potassium is the key nutrient in cassava production due to high K removal in the tuberous roots and relatively poor K supplying power of soils. K favours plant growth, dry matter partitioning, production of tuberous roots, tuber yield and tuber quality. In general, cassava responds upto 100 kg K2O per ha and the response is still higher for high yielding hybrid varieties under irrigated conditions. The long term fertilizrer experiment indicated the synergistic effect of N, P and K on yield and quality. Higher levels of K based on sorption characteristics and critical levels under MYR resulted in potential yield. Nutritional disorders due to Kand strategies for effective management of K viz., cultivation of K efficient cassava lines, early maturing genotypes, integrated nutrient management, split application of K, green manuring and use of amendments like ash are also discussed. In future, greater emphazis should be given to develop slow release K products, K mobilizers,K management for cropping system, site specific nutrient management and targeted yield approach in sustaining the productivity of cassava.
