The genus Cinnamomum Schaeffer comprises about 250 species. Cinnarilomum tama/a is one of the economical species belonging to this genus where the dried leaf is used as II spice for flavouring culinary preparations. The leaf oil obtained, by distillation is used for flavouring liquors and confections, and has immense pharmaceutical applications~ Wide variability is reported in the oil content of leaf obtained from different localities.'Various chemotypes are also reported toexisl in C. tamala: This paper reviews the work calTied out so far on the leaf oil of C. tamala and its chemical composition.
