Chromosme number in 29 germplasm collections and 22 open-pollinated seedling progenies of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is determined by counting mitotic metaphase plates. Among the germplasm collections analyzed 25 were having 2n=63, the accepted chromosome number of turmeric, 1 was having 2n=61 and 3 were having 2n=84. The seedling progenies showed variation in chromosome number ranging from 2n=63 to 2n=86, of which 2n=84 was the most frequent. The role of abnormalities during triploid segregation in generating chromosome number variation among open pollinated seedling progenies is discussed. Variation in chromosome number among certain germplasm accessions is an indicative of their origin as seedling progenies. This is the first report of numerical variation of chromosomes in seedling progenies of turmeric. Not Available |
