Indigenous woody perennials are integral component of agricultural production system and have immense economic, ecological and social values in arid region. They provide variety of products that include food, fodder, fuel wood, gums, resins, fibre, medicine etc. they help to maintain ecological balance via preventing soil erosion, improving fertility of soil and promoting biodiversity. They possess peculiar structural, functional and biological characteristics, which allow them to survive in harsh climatic conditions. A number of perennial underutilized fruit species of arid region are used as human food in normal as well as in famine condition and play a vital role as life support species. The nutritional composition of these species indicates that these species could be important contributors to improving the nutrition and livelihood security of people of hot arid region.
