As mentioned in a previous publication (Seshappa, 1953 a) observations were started in January 1952, on the bottom muds of the West Hill Sea near Calicut (Malabar Coast) with a view to elucidating their role in the inshore phosphate cycle, this latter being known to be of great importance in determining the biological cycles and fishery productivity of any aquatic area. The studies consisted of routine examination and analyses of mud samples from two selected stations (4 metres and 19 metres) for temperature, pH, percentage of silt colloidal matter, moisture percentage and also the interstitial and adsorbed phosphate.
