Description Equine rotavirus is one of the major etiological agents associated with diarrhoea in foals. The rotavirus was detected in 4 of 50 (8%) diarrhoeic foals below 2 months of age in a farm near Hisar (Haryana), using RNA-PAGE and group A rotavirus ELISA kit. Rotaviruses were isolated from all the positive samples in MA104 cell lines alter 6-8 blind passages in serum-free MEM medium supplemented with 2 µg/ml af 11 typsin. The RNA profiles of the rotavirus isolates were compared with refrence bovine group A rotaviruses (NCDV, B223, CR129 and CK156). The electrophorectic profile of the equine rotavirus isolates From the outbreak in June 2003 (FRV2 and FRV3) differed from those, of the july outbreak (FRV25 and FRV28) in migration of RNA segment 5. confirming that at least 2 distinct strains of equine rotaviruses are prevalent in the region. This is the first report of isolation and electropherotyping of rotaviruses from diarrhoeic foals in India.
