The present observations relate to the effects of the effluents on fish on account of
discharges into the Tungabhadra river by MIS. Harihar Polyfibre Company (HPF) and
MIS. Gwalior Rayon Silk Manufacturing Company (GRASIM) located at Kumarapatanarn,
Ranibennur Taluka, Dharwad district, Karnataka. The studies were undertaken on a
request from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSFCb) tor analysis of
hydrobiological'features of the affectp-? GL:siciies of the river consequent upon large scale
fish mortalih, on 14th FOI=:S~I~, '1984. The KSPCB, as an interim measure, have enforced,
certain control measures, pending detailed environmental assessment of the problem. In view
of the interim pollution control measures and the time lag between episodal fish kill
and initiation of studies by CIFRI, it was felt that the hydro-biological appraisal of the affected
river stretch during post-episodal period would #yield little information on causative factors
of fish kill. Hence, the present study directed its main focus on metal accumulation in fish
and sediments as the industrial processes in the present case involves use of metals.
