With the growing awareness of the contamination of the aquatic environment, metal pollution studies are being carried out all over the world. However, few studiesfin lndia are directed on this subject, especially on the metal levels in commercially important prawns inhabiting coastal and estuarine waters of lndia (Kureishy, 1986 ; Mahajan et z!., 1987 ; Lakshrnanan, 1988 ; Krishnakumar et a/., 1990). The present investigation was undertaken to study the distribution and seasonal variation of heavy metals in P. indicus inhabiting Ennore estuary considering the human health hazard and strict quality control measures adopted by foreign markets for prawns, which are an important foreign exchange earner for the country. The Ennore estuary in Madras is a major source for commercially important brackish water species of fish and prawn. This estuary receives untreated sewage and industrial effluents through Buckingham canal and Red Hills surplus channel, and agricultural run-off through Kortaliyar river. As a result, the quality of water is sub-staiidard in the estuary from the fisheries as well as from the public health point of view Not Available |
