Coastal farmers follow different enterprise combinations according to the resources available to them. A study conducted in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu revealed that the major farming systems practised by the farmers were: crop + dairy, crop + dairy + poultry, crop + dairy + poultry + fisheries, crop + dairy + poultry + sheep/goats, crop + dairy + poultry + horticulture, and crop + dairy + poultry + sheep/goats + horticulture. Livestock holdings, landholding, marketing behaviour, the perception of integrated farming systems and communication behaviour were the important contributing factors to sustainable livelihoods in the farming systems found.
