The NE region has vast and varied fisheries resources in the form of reservoirs, tanks and ponds, beels, oxbow lakes and other derelict waters covering 4.18 lakh ha water-spread area, excluding rivers and streams which is estimated at 20,875 km. Open water bodies of the region are important common property resources and are part of the diverse socio-cultural traditions of the region including community fishing.
