Abstract/Description: | Soil is the essence of life on earth. It serves as a natural medium for the growth of plants that sustains human and animal life. Healthy soils provide us with a range of ecosystem services such as resisting erosion, receiving and storing water, retaining nutrients and acting as an environmental buffer in the landscapes. Soils have undergone unabated degradation at an alarming rate by wind and water erosion, desertification, and salinization resulting from misuse and improper farming practices. Soil quality, antonym for soil degradation, has deteriorated due to the natural and anthropogenic activities particlularly with the advent of the intensive management practices. Present day need is to undestand the defintion and concept of soil quality and soil health and associated concepts, computation and assessment of soil quality, and finally the influence of management practices on the soil quality with an overall objective of idetifying the soilquality- promoting practices. An attempt has been made in this chapter to elucidate different facets associated with soil quality and soil health. |
