Abstract/Description: | Black gram ( Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper)is one of the major grain legumes in therainfed agro-ecosystems of India. It isnative to India and has been cultivatedsince ancient times. It has also beenintroduced to other tropical regions ofthe world by Indian immigrants. It isgrown in cropping systems as a mixedcrop, catch crop, sequential crop besides being grown as sole crop under residualmoisture conditions after the harvest ofrice and also before and after the harvestof other summer crops under semi-irrigated and dry land conditions 1 . It hashigh nutritive value and is rich in pro-teins, essential vitamins and minerals. Itis very popular in south Indian and Pun- jabi cuisine. The split dal is extensivelyused in culinary preparation like dosa, idli, vada and papad.Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa,Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat,Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh are major black gram cultivating states in India.Annual production in India ranges from1.3 to 1.5 million tonnes and contributesto 10% of total pulse production 2 . Gene-tic resources of any crop are the corner-stone for breeding improved varieties. With this in view, collections of blackgram were made from 17 districts ofAndhra Pradesh during explorations un-dertaken in different agroclimatic regionsof Andhra Pradesh from 1998 to 2004.The accessions were evaluated for diffe-rent morphological traits to studythe variations. Here we have attemptedto integrate DIVA-GIS software(www.DIVA-GIS.org ) for the diversityanalysis of pod characters in black gramgermplasm |
