Abstract/Description: | Crop simulation models are valuable tools for quantifying yield gap. An investigation was undertaken for analyzing yield gap of cotton in nine selected soils of Wardha district, Maharashtra and identifying the biophysical causes of the same using Infocrop simulation model. High simulated potential yield of cotton (3673 kg ha-1) low simulated water limited (492-2214 kg ha-1) and former's actual yield (350-2000 kg ha-1) resulted in diffrent types of yield gaps of veried magnitudes. Low organic carbon content, shallow depth, inadequate input use and improper seed rate were the major biophysical causes identified for the low actual yield and thus large yield gaps. Measures suggested, among others, for bridging the yield gap include evolving genotypes (Desi hybrids) and technologies suited to shallow depth soils, using adequate inputs (fertilizers, manures, etc.) and providing community bore wells for irrigation. |
