Abstract/Description: | Soil clay minerals are one of the most reactive and important components of the earth's surface. These minerals have immense importance and use not only in the field of agriculture, but in ecological (heavy metal, nuclear wastes and toxic organic pollution), industrial (ceramic, pesticide, petrochemicals, petroleum refining, chemical, pharmaceutical and related fields) and other aesthetic uses. Research on soil clay minerals in India have been carried out with lot of interest and passion since the days of the doyen of soil physical chemistry Prof. J. N. Mukherjee and his illustrious students, colleagues and their successors. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of soil clay minerals of India in terms of their nature, properties and applications for management have been accomplished during these years. Research endeavours were also focussed on quantification of minerals , significance of soil clay minerals in understanding the basic soil forming processes, mineral-organic interaction and relationships, standardising methodologies, understanding the minerals' occurrence in relation to climate change, modeling the structure of clay minerals, unravelling myths of nature through more accurate understanding of the minerals and their intimate relationship with edaphololgy. However, despite our efforts and understanding on the role of soil clay minerals, it is essential to investigate their finer intricacies, their behaviour in combination under natural system, their surfacial modifications in the forms they occur in nature and their changes in a particular agroeco-environment. The permanent and variable charges of these minerals in the light of nature's endowments when investigated in their right perspectives (with the advancement of newer techniques) should provide adequate knowledge for the way forward. Understanding the edaphological properties with the occurrence of minerals, mapping of mineral soil modifiers, indicator minerals for climate change, understanding the interaction of soil clay minerals with organic matter to mitigate climate change, role of clay minerals (particularly the nano-clays) in unravelling to maintain the eco-system environment and in soil resilience research. Having reconciled adequately, the prospects of the use of soil clay minerals in agriculture and many other wider fields would appear more meaningful and would also create interest in formulating various policies and interventions. |
