Abstract/Description: | Chhattisgarh basin covers anarcaof about 36,000 sq. kn and it is the third largest Purana basin after Vindhyan and Cuddapah. Field investigation of 1:10,000 scale survey shows underlying geology as Purple Shale with gypsum, dolomite interbands and limestone, and hence formation of Vertisols/Vertic intergrades of fine textured deep shrink-swell soils in this area is difficult to reconcile. The formation of such soils require huge amount of smectite, which is not the first weathering product of shale or dolomite. Weathering of shale leads to formation of clay-rich soils with low shear stoength. The geomorphological and neoteconic history of the study area investigation indicate the knot. The drainage map of the study area gives some clue that there were mighty rivers, originated from the Maikal ranges which are the extension of the Deccan Trap and further cuffing across the Nandgaon and chilpi group which is of volcanic in origin. These rivers (pong and sakri) might have carried the basaltic and volcanic material and that got deposited in the undulating plains of the Chhattisgarh. The mineralogical analysis reveals that the Vertisols occurring in Bemetara show the parental legacy with Deccan trap basalt. Therefore, it is envisaged that the Vertisols present in Bemetara cafl only be formed from plagioclase rich parent material. |
