Abstract/Description: | Mulberry (Morus alba L.) is a deep rooted foliage crop, which is cultivated widely in Assam for rearing silkworm (Bombyx moriL.). The fertility status of soil on which the mulberry is grown affects the yield and quality of leaf, which reflects on the quaJity of silk produced. A study was undertaken to assess the nutrient status of mulberry growing soils in some selected seri-villages of Golaghat district of Assam. Composite soil samples were collected from the areas under mulberry cultivation at two different depths namely, 0-20 and 20-50 cm. Results indicated that soil pH varied from 5.0 to 7.6 and 5.3 to 7.6 n the surface and sub-surface soils, respectively with the corresponding mean values of 6.1 1 and 6.46. Soil organic carbon (SOC) content ranged from 0.04 to 1 .90%o and 0.02 to 0.7l%o for surface and sub-surface soils, respectively with the corresponding mean values of 0.58 and0.24%o. Data on available nutrients indicated that N content varied from 66.5 to 408 and47.5 to 332 kg ha-1 in the surface and sub-surface soils, respectively; the corresponding values for P (as P2O5) were 3l.2to 87.2 and2l.7 to 80.4 kg ha-1. Mean content of N and P (as P2Os) in the surface soil.were 250 and 59.3 kg ha-1, respectively; whereas, the corresponding values for the sub-surface soil were 174 and47.4kgha-1. Similarly, higher K content was also observed in the surface soil as compared to sub-surface soil. Data showedthat 68.2% of the soils were low in N, whereas 3l.8o/o of the soils were in medium category. In case of P, about 13.2, 5l.l and 35.7% of the samples were categorized under low, medium and high, respectively. The percentage of samples categorized under low, medium and high in case of K was 14.0,48.2 and37.8o/o, respectively. Micronutrient status also indicated higher content of Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and B in the surface soil as con.]pared to sub-surface soil. About 48.2% of the soil samples were deficient in available Zn. However, no def-rciencl' of Cu, Fe and Mn was observed. About 51.2% of the samples were marginal in B status. Significant positive conelation rvas obtained between nutrient content and organic carbon. However, significant negative correlation was found between nutrient content and soil pH. The study indicates that appropriate nutrient management is required in respect of N, P, K, Zn and B in soils under mulberry land use in Golaghat district of Assam. |
