| Abstract/Description: | A SMALL GULLY WITH GULLIED AREA OF 0.21 ha , CATCHMENT AREA OF 42ha AND OPEN TO BIOTIC INTERFERENCE , WAS SELECTED IN VILLAGE UMRETHA , AGRA IN 1971 TO MONITOR THE RATE OF GULLY EXTENSION AND THE GULLIED AREA ENGULFING THE VILLAGE AND AGRICULTURAL FIELDS. DATA COLLECTED DURING 1971 TO 1986 INDICATED THAT IN 15 YEARS THE LENGTH AND PERIMETER BECAME ALMOST DOUBLE. WIDTH INCREASED TO TWO AND A HALF TIMES AND THE AREA OF GULLY INCREASED TO FOUR TIMES. THE INITIAL AREA WHICH WAS 0.5 % IN 1971 , INCREASED TO 2% OF THE CATCHMENT AREA BY 1986 , WHICH AMOUNTS TO 300% INCREASE IN THE AREA OF GULLY OVER THE INITIAL AREA. AS THIS GULLY IS ACCOMMODATING THE SEDIMENT LOSS FROM THE ADJOINING FIELDS , THE BED SLOPE IS REDUCED BY 50% |
