| Abstract/Description: | THE NET RETURNS FROM SAFFLOWER WERE 5.9 AND 5.1 TIMES HIGHER THAN THAT OF DRYLAND COTTON WITH TRADITIONAL PRACTICES UNDER ADEQUATE MOISTURE CONDITION OF RABI , 1973 -74 AND LIMITING MOISTURE CONDITIONS OF RABI , 1974-75 RESPECTIVELY. CULTIVATION OF SAFFLOWER IN PLACE OF DRYLAND COTTON AND RESTRICTION OF COTTON CULTIVATION TO AREAS WITH ASSURED IRRIGATION ARE SUGGESTED FOR HIGHER ECONOMIC RETURNS . SUITABLE AREAS FOR SAFFLOWER IN KARNATAKA ARE IDENTIFIED. PROSPECTS OF INCREASING THE INTENSITY OF CROPPING IN MEDIUM AND SHALLOW SOILS IN TH REGION BY INCLUSION OF SAFFLOWER IN THE EXISTING CROPPING PATTERN ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. |
