| Abstract/Description: | THE PAPER DISCUSSES THE IMPACT OF SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION MEASURES CARRIED OUT DURING 1963-93 , ON THE HEALTH OF ARABLE AND NON- ARABLE RAVINE LANDS IN GUJARAT STATE. THE RESULTS INDICATED CONSIDERABLE CHANGE IN SOIL PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES DUE TO SUCH MEASURES . THE PERCENT ORGANIC CARBON INCREASED UNDER ALL VEGETATIVE COVERS. THE WATER HOLDING CAPACITY INCREASED FROM 46.4% TO 56% UNDER CLOSURE TREATMENT. THE AGGREGATE (.0.25 mm) WERE HIGHER UNDER GRASSES AND TREES RANGING FROM 37.9 TO 83/4% AS COMPARED TO RAINFED CULTIVATED FIELD (14.6%) . CUMULATIVE INFILTRATION VARIED FROM 4 TO 15 cm /HR UNDER DIFFERENT FOREST COVERS. THE MECHANICAL ANALYSIS INDICATED ENRICHMENT WITH SILT IN THE UPPER HORIZON OF THE PROFILES OVER TIME. |
