| Abstract/Description: | THE PAPER DISCUSSES REHABILITATION MEASURES TO STABILIZE A LIMESTONE MINED WATERSHED (64 HA) LOCATED AT SAHASTRADHARA IN MUSSOORIE HILLS. THE CORRECTIVE MEASURES INCLUDED BOTH MECHANICAL AND BIOLOGICAL TO STABILIZE (A) MINESPOIL SLOPES AND (B) DRAINAGE CHANNELS. SEVERELY ERODED SLOPES WERE VEGETATED WITH SUPPORTING MECHANICAL MEASURES LIKE CONTOUR TRENCHES, GULLY PLUGS , GEOJUTE MATTING AND LOGWOOD CRIB STRUCTURE ETC. IN THE MAIN DRAINAGE CHANNELS WHERE THE BULK OF DEBRIS WAS TRANSPORTED , GABION CHECK DAMS/ CROSS BARRIERS AND SILT DETENTION BASINS WERE CONSTRUCTED , SUITABLE FUEL, FODDER AND FIBRE PLANT SPECIES WERE PLANTED IN THE AREA. THUS, WITH SUCH MEASURES NOT ONLY THE EROSION AND DEBRIS MOVEMENT WERE CHECKED BUT WATER, PLANT AND SOIL RESOURCES WERE ALSO IMPROVED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY AND ECONOMIC PROSPERITY. |
