Abstract/Description: | Niger is commonly known as Ramtil in Hindi, considered as a minor oilseed crop. It is very important in terms of its oil content, quality and potential. It contains 32 to 40% content of quality oil with 18 to 24% protein in the seed. Niger oil is slow drying, used in food, paint, soap, and as an illuminant. It is used as a substitute for olive oil, can be adulterated with rapeseed, sesame and linseed oil. The oil is used in cooking. The oil is considered good for health. Following oil extraction, the seed cake can be stored and used as an animal feed supplement. Niger seed meal is reported to be free from any toxic substance and contains more crude fiber than most oilseed meals. Whole plants are used as green manure in the pre flowering stage. Plants are used as a 'bee plant'. Niger has an advantage of having good degree of tolerance to diseases, insect pests and attack of wild animals. Niger has great potential for soil conservation. |
