| Abstract/Description: | IndianAgriculturehistoricallyhasgrosslybeenusinganimalandhumanpowerformajorityoffarmoperations.Duetotheadvancementofscienceinfarmmechanizationinthelastfewdecadestherehavebeensubstantialinputofenergyandpowerfrommachinery.MajorpercentageofthetoolsandequipmentsusedbyIndianfarmersaremanuallyoperated,eitherbymanorbywoman. Enhancingtheperformanceandincreasingtheefficienciesofsuchmanuallyoperatedequipmentsandtoolsthehuman-machineinteraction,comfortandsafetyofoperatorsisofparamountimportance.Machinefactors,humanfactorsandlackofskillaresomemajorcausethatleadtofasterfatigue,poorworkperformanceandoccasionalinjuriestoworkers.ThedataofagriculturalaccidentscollectedbyAllIndiaCoordinatedResearchProjectonErgonomicsandSafetyinAgricultureineightstatesofthecountryindicatesabout5.5%oftotalagriculturalaccidentsarefatalandrest94.5%accidentleadstonon-fatalinjuries.Manyofthesenon-fatalinjuriesleadstolossoflimbsanddisabilityofdifferentdegrees,thisbringssocialandeconomicdifficultiestoworkersandtheirfamilies.SafetygadgetsandpersonalprotectiveequipmenthavebeendevelopedbytwelvecentersofAICRPonErgonomicsandSafetyinAgriculture(ESA).Theseareaimedtoforewarnorlowerthechancesofagriculturalaccidentsandsubsequentinjurytoworker. |
