Abstract/Description: | Coconut [Cocos nucifera L.,] belongs to the palm family (Arecaceae) and is aptly called as ‘Tree of Heaven’. Coconut is cultivated in more than 90 countries, with an annual production of 59 million tons and the production of coconut is concentrated in Asia as it contributes nearly 84% of global output. India stands second (9.8 million tons) next only to Philippines (14 million tons) in annual coconut production. Coconut and its value added products have numerous health benefits. Recently, coconut and its products have attained greater significance in mainstream media, digital world, and medical practitioners have endorsed its health benefits. Among the several health benefits of coconut oil, cardio-protectant and neuro-protective effects assume greater significance because the currently available therapeutic models to treat cardiac and neuron associated ailments are fraught with many side effects. On the other hand detractors propagate that coconut and its products especially coconut oil (CNO) are loaded with saturated fatty acids (SFA) which makes the consumer prone to cardio-vascular diseases (CVD). In this work let us review the potential benefits of coconut oil consumption with respect to cardiovascular diseases and neuro-protective functions |
