dc.description.abstract | A rapid appraisal of the nutrient status of cassava growing soils of Kerala was undertaken during 2003-2007 in the major cassava growing districts having an area of more than 5000 hectares. Accordingly, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alapuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram districts were surveyed and a total of 226 soil samples representing 104 uplands and 122 lowlands were collected and analysed for different soil chemical parameters. The mean values of the different parameters indicating the nutrient status of the soils of the soils of lowlands and uplands growing cassava showed not much variation in the nine districts of Kerala. Both lowland and upland soilswere acidic in soil reaction with mean pH values of 4.65 and 4.76 respectively. Based on the Soil Nutrient Index (SNI) computed, the cassava growing soils of Kerala was foundto be medium in organic carbon (2.02), P(2.41) and K (2.12) and low in N (1.37). In general, soils of all the nine districts were medium to high in organic carbon with Kottayam (3.00) and Idukki (2.92) having the highest SNI. In all the districts, the available N status was low except for Pathanamthitta. The available P status of the soil was high in all the surveyed districts with soils soils from Alapuzha (3.00) and Kottayam (2.89) having the highest SNI. Tha available K status of the districts ranged from low to high with Palakkad having the highest SNI of 2.77. Since cassava require soils rich in organic matter with high contents of basic cations for both yield and quality, the soils of Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta and Malappuram are found to be the best for growing cassava. | en_US |
