Abstract/Description: | Land and water are the most valuable natural resources. The whole agriculture sector mainly depends on these two resources. Agriculture supporting about 7.7 billion population by food supply, this indirectly putting lots of load on the land and water resources. The problems of degradation of land resources and declination of fresh water availability have been immerging very badly for decades. Out of 149 Mha ice-free global land around 15 percent is reported as degraded land, moreover 33 percent of global land area is under moderate to highly degradation rate. Similarly, in India the problem of land degradation is very serious. The degraded land in India reported up to 45 percent of total geographical area on India. The several causes like (i) physical, (ii) chemical, and (iii) human induces, are found to be responsible for degradation of land resources. The soil erosion contributes to land degradation of land. Globally about 55 percent of land is under degradation due to soil erosion and about 53 billion tonnes of soil we are losing annually in India. Excess soil loses cause the decrease in the quality of water and reservoir storage capacity due to sediment load and siltation. Thus, efficient management of land and water has become a central point for sustainability of agriculture and food systems in the country. The practices of construction of engineering structures alone or along with crop based (agronomical) measures for soil conservation from erosion are needed to be apply more judiciously. However, there is need for development of new suitable technologies to arrest the soil erosion in this area. A lot of policies and program are being made and run by state and central governments of India to wards efficient management of land and water which needs strong and holistic implementation platforms with community participation. |
