Abstract/Description: | Narmada is the fifth longest the River in the Indian subcontinent. Bargi reservoir is among a chain of 30 major reservoirs constructed on the Narmada. A survey was conducted to study the diversity and distribution of aquatic macrophytes in Bargi reservoir. A total of 43 species of aquatic macrophytes were reported. Diversity of aquatic macrophytes was higher in shallow and fast flowing water. Emergent and rooted emergent species were found to be the most dominant group of macrophytes. Three species of alien invasive aquatic macrophytes were reported. Ipomoea carnea Jacq. (E), an alien invasive originally from tropical America, was found to be the most dominant species of aquatic macrophytes. It was concluded that construction of Bargi reservoir has altered the habitat characteristics and associated diversity of aquatic macrophytes. |
