Abstract/Description: | Hypothalamo-neurosecretory system of the Indian mahor carp, Labeo rohita (Family Cyprinidae), consisted mainly of nucleus preopticus (NPO) or preoptic area (POA), nucleus lateralis tuberis (NLT) and their axonal tracts. NPO was a paired structure situated on either side of the third ventricle dorsal to the optic chiasma and generally looked inverted L-shape in sagittal section. The horizontal limb of NPO comprised sparsely distributed neurons whereas the neurosecretory cells were closely packed in the vertical limb. NPO was divisible into a dorsal pars magnocellularis (PMC) comprising larger neurosecretory cells and ventral pars parvocellularis (PPC) with smaller neuronal cells. NPO and NLT were positive to Aldehyde Fuchsin (AF), chrome-alum-haematoxylin-phloxine (CAHP) and acid fuchsin. Generally, neurons of PMC and PPC were bipolar and contributed beaded axons to form left and right neurohypophysial main tracts. Neurosecretory cells of NPO and NLT exhibited fluctuations in their secretory activity in response to the ovarian maturation. |
