Abstract/Description: | With the current rate of population increase, scientists have predicted that the world will need to double its food production by 2050. Aquatic foods are increasingly recognized for their key role in food security and nutrition, not just as a source of protein, but also as a unique and extremely diverse provider of essential omega-3 fatty acids and bioavailable micronutrients. Globally, aquatic foods provide about 17 percent of animal protein, reaching over 50 percent in several countries in Asia and Africa. In 2020, fisheries and aquaculture production reached an all-time record of 214 million tonnes, worth about USD 424 billion. Similarly, the global aquaculture production reached a record 122.6 million tonnes, with a total value of USD 281.5 billion. In 2020, an estimated 58.5 million people were employed globally in the primary fisheries and aquaculture sector and is aimed to increase global aquaculture production from 49% to 53% by 2030 (FAO, 2022). Global consumption of fish has reached 20.2 kg per capita, more than double the average of 9.9 kg per capita in the 1960s. |
