Abstract/Description: | Selection of appropriate males during reproduction is highly recommended for the production of good quality seeds. The present study compares spermatophore quality evaluation in wild and captive (pond, Indoor reinforced polypropylene tank (IFT) and outdoor concrete tank (IFT)) reared banana shrimp, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis males during domestication. This was carried out to evaluate spermatophore weight, sperm count, live sperms and simple regression analysis for body weight versus spermatophore weight, live sperms and sperm count in dierent age group of male F. merguiensis broodstock. The sperm quality was assessed in pond reared shrimps after 7 months, IFT and OCT reared shrimps after 12 and 14 months of culture. Spermatophore weight, sperm count and live sperms in wild and captive reared (pond, IFT and OCT) male F. merguiensis showed signicant variation at 1% level (p<0.01). The regression between body weight and sperm count showed that with each unit increase of body weight, the spermatophore weight also increases. The regression analysis of these observations between shrimp weight and percentage live sperms substantiated that male when reared 14 months in IFT have improved percentage live sperms than the wild shrimps. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic observation of the sperm in F. merguiensis also substantiated the present ndings. Our ndings conrmed that pond reared shrimps if reared for 7 months and later in IFT for 7 months may result in the production of high quality of sperms |
