Abstract/Description: | In India, though the majority of the people are dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods, the contribution of Agriculture to Gross Domestic Product is not in that proportion. The main reason behind this is the farmers not considering farming as a business venture. The study was carried out to explore the entrepreneurial orientation of farmers of Nainital District of Uttarakhand. Being a hill district nearest to the Pantnagar University, Nainital district was selected where scientists have transferred soybean cultivation technology under the All India Coordinated Research Project of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. To better represent the district, two villages, one Village from Bhabhar block, i.e. Fatehpur and one village from the hilly block, i.e. Bardhou, were selected for the study. A total of 64 soybean firm farmers formed part of the respondents for the study who were interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule administered personally. The majority of the farmers either belonged to the early or late majority and had a medium level of risk orientation, change agency contact and sources of information. Along with friends and relatives; television, followed by the newspaper, was the most trusted information source for the farmers. Extension personnel should promote diversification in agriculture to increase the risk-bearing ability of the farmers. To enhance farmers ’ entrepreneurial orientation, they should also encourage local master trainers for better technology transfer and telecast television programmes on success stories of farmers who have excelled in their business from the local channels for improvement in entrepreneurial orientation of farmers. |
