Abstract/Description: | Highergrainyieldinhigh-yieldingricevarietiesismostlydrivenbynitrogen(N) fertilizerappliedinabundantamountsleadingtoincreasedproductioncostand environmentalpollution.Thishasfueledthestudiesonnitrogenuseefficiency (NUE)todecreasetheNfertilizerapplicationinricetothepossibleextent.NUEis a complexphysiological trait controlledbymultiplegenes, but yet tobe completelydeciphered inrice.Withanobjectiveof identifyingthepromising physiological traits associatedwithNUE in rice, theperformanceof 14 rice genotypeswasassessedatN0,N50,N100,andN150forfour(twowetandtwo dry) seasons using agro-morphological, grain yield, flag leaf traits, photosyntheticpigmentcontent, flagleafgasexchangetraits, andchlorophyll fluorescence traits. Furthermore, thedatawereused toderivevariousNUE indicestoidentifythemostappropriateindicesusefultoscreenricegenotypesat N50.Results indicatethatwiththeincreaseinNapplication, cumulativegrain yieldincreasedsignificantlyuptoN100(5.02tha−1);however, theincrement in grainyieldwasmarginalatN150(5.09tha−1).Themeanreductionofgrainyield wasonly26.66%atN50rangingfrom15.0%to34.2%.Thesignificantfindingof thestudyistheidentificationofflagleafchlorophyllfluorescencetraits(Fv/Fm, FPSII,ETR,andqP)andCiassociatedwithgrainyieldunderN50,whichcanbe usedtoscreenNuseefficientgenotypes inriceunder reducedNapplication.
